  • Mystic, CT, US

Yacht price :

$149,000

Overview

The Hatteras 52 aft-cockpit motor yacht is known for its smart layout with three cabins, three heads, plenty of family space inside & out as well as having a decent sized aft cockpit at water level for water sports, easy boarding and provisioning. Validated improvements, upgrades and a fantastic price make this example a great boat and a great buy.

SEA SMOKE shows incredibly and it should with $175,000 of Upgrades & Improvements over the last 5 years. Mechanical systems, engines, generators all fully serviced and professionally maintained.  Updates include 3 newer windshield windows, enclosures, soft goods, engine controls, and bottom stripped and barrier coated in 2014.

Sea Smoke is priced so well because there were some issues found in a recent survey (May 2019) including areas of saturation in the closed-cell core in the topsides, which was found to be bonded and structurally sound but should be remediated if the boat is to stay in a region where freezing temps could possibly cause delamination. The owner is looking for an as-is deal and the boat is priced accordingly. More information available upon request.

The Salon is the central living space which the other compartments join, including the connected galley which makes entertaining easy. Salon headroom is easy 6' 6".  Large windows let in plenty of natural light when wanted while blinds block it for privacy and shade. The focal point is a custom L-shaped off-white leather sofa installed in 2016 accompanied by a hi-lo accent table with barrel chair with ottoman opposite.

Three windows in the front of the Salon were replaced in 2014 to eliminate the fogging and distortion seen in original windows.

Entertainment systems include: Samsung 27" Flat Screen TV,  Yamaha Sound System     3D AV Receiver RX-V675, TRAC vision Multi-service Interface Box,  Direct TV,  Dolby BlueRay Disc/ DVD

The interior is a white-washed decor that was been refurbished in 2014 and looks sharp including neutral beige carpets.  Note there are no bad odors in this boat.

Galley

Only three-steps down, the open air galley allows hosts to interact with guests in the Salon. Matching the salon decor, the galley is bright and has an off-white color scheme. New U-Line Refrigerator in 2014 has a main upper door with two pull-out drawers below, one of which is a freezer.  Two burner electric cooktop.  Whirlpool AccuWave & SteamCook Microwave with vent.  Single-basin stainless steel sink. Miele Dimension Dishwasher.

The dinette across from galley can seat five and makes a great space for casual meals and coffee. A VHF radio installed here keeps you connected to happenings outside the boat.

The 3rd Stateroom, located aft, has upper & lower single berths, ideal for kids or crew who don't want to share a bed.  Bunks are wide and spaced to be comfortable for adults.  This cabin also has its own head with separate shower stall. even if you don't need the accommodations, this is a great space for storage, workshop of converting to a study.

There is a washer & dryer behind a full length door in the accommodations area.

Outdoor Areas

The Aft Deck is up about 4 stairs from the aft end of the Salon.  This is a huge space with hardtop and new enclosures in 2014.   There's an L-shaped sofa arrangement on port side with mahogany, folding leaf table and additional chairs.   The forward side decks are accessed through twin doors.  There's a wet bar forward which includes refrigerator, ice maker and cabinets for storage above and below.  This entire area is Air-Conditioned & heated while sliding glass windows on the sides provide natural ventilation.  The deck furniture in this area was new in 2014.  Entertainment system includes: Flat screen TV & speakers.  Headroom is minimum 6'7'.

The Hatteras 52 Cockpit Motoryacht has no exterior teak and the decks are non-skid fiberglass.  Bow pulpit and anchor roller are surrounded by double, stainless steel life rails.  The foredeck has a Galley Maid windlass with 3/8" chain and a 37Kg CQR anchor.  Spare Danforth anchor for back up.   Fender racks of S/S, for 4, mounted on Foredeck for fender storage and twin dock boxes, with cushions, are anchored to foredeck.   Hatch over the VIP stateroom.   Washdown valve mounted on foredeck.
This model has full Walkaround decks, and through the aft deck, so line handling and fender placement is a breeze.  Rear line handling is simplified due to the cockpit area.  There is a intercom speaker in the cockpit enabling line handler and helmsman to communicate.

From the Cockpit, there is a Transom door leading to the Swimstep.  For water sport, swimming and diving, this is a must.  For families with children, this is a must.  Another benefit is it makes for simple, easy loading and unloading from dinghy for guests and for provisioning.

Superstructure and Hull:

Bottom:

In the summer of 2014, the entire bottom was stripped and faired as necessary and then barrier coated and finally bottom painted.  This was to strip layers of old, flakey bottom paint, not for blisters or damage.   All running gear was thoroughly inspected and addressed as needed.

Hull Moisture

A marine surveyor inspected the topsides of the hull in May 2019.  A moisture meter inspection of the topsides revealed elevated moisture found in areas of the hull along the lengh of the hull at the bottom of the cored area of the topsides. The hull is solid glass below the waterline and no structural issues were found.

The marina service staff cut a modest hole into the inner part of the hull in the engine compartment to further inspect the elevated moisture. According to the service manager, water immediately started draining from the cut opening made within the engine compartment. This indicates that the closed-cell foam core is "saturated" with water in this area. Fortunately, the core was reported to still be bonded to the fiberglass in this inspection area.

The following is mostly speculation coming from discussions with the surveyor, service manager, and indirectly from other marine service technicians. The hull does not have a structural weakness where the foam core is still bonded to the fiberglass. However, there is risk that the bond between core and glass could fail in the future from freeze & thaw cycles in the areas that remain saturated. The surveyor's opinion is that the moisture has been in the hull for a long time and likely entered from the many cutouts & fittings located near the top of the hull which likely had not had their waterproof barriers properly maintained. The moisture migrated downward over time by gravity. Since the core material is closed cell foam, the mechanism by which the water has moved downward is unknown. One theory is that freeze cycles have caused the wet foam core itself to crack, creating micro-channels for the water to migrate downward by gravity.

Since the core appears to still be bonded, the most practical remediation method would be to drill a series of holes along the bottom of the core material to drain as much water as possible by gravity and/or vacuum. It is usually preferable to drill these holes on the inside of the hull. If so, a significant portion of the work and cost involved would be by gaining access where needed in the interior by cutting out and removing interior joinery and then reassembling after the drain process is completed. A less expensive option could be to drain the hull from the outside, then fill and refinish the drain holes. While final finish work could be needed, this method could still be far less costly than draining from the interior. It would also be prudent to inspect and re-bed all openings & fittings in the hull as necessary to prevent further ingress of water. The cost to perform this work depends on the method selected and what is found as the work proceeds. Nobody can offer a firm quote, but I've heard loose estimates from a low of $10,000 up to $35,000 to have a professional marine service company do the work.

The boat is seaworthy as-is and may be launched and enjoyed immediately, however it would probably be a good idea to plan on remediating the saturated core condition if the boat is to remain in a region where freezing temps could cause damage. The goal of draining the water is to reduce the saturated condition to reduce the chances of delamination from freeze & thaw cycles, however, the areas will continue to show elevated moisture during future inspections which may not be a structural issue could still have an effect on the vessel's value.

This boat is priced very well for an as-is sale to a buyer who understands the issue and willing to take it on. Somebody with a basic knowledge of composites and is handy could possibly address the issue themselves for a fraction of the cost of professional marine service.
